What is the web?
The World Wide Web is a collected works of electronic
documents that are linked together very much like a spider web.
The electronic documents are stored on servers and sent out
when the request for the URL is made.
What you need to know or have in order to surf the
net
To begin with, you need a computer. A computer that is
Internet capable is essential. If you purchased an inexpensive
or older computer, make sure you ask if it is Internet
ready.
Make sure to ask if the computer has web browser software.
If it does not, it can be purchased at any computer store. Web
browser software allows you to access the World Wide Web.
An Internet service provider (ISP) is the company that you
pay every month to remain on the Internet. A DSL or Broadband
connection is recommended. Dial is slow and often
frustrating.
If there is too much Internet activity, you may get booted
off the Internet and have to start all over again.
Servers - A server is where all of your information is
stored. Servers are usually part of the ISP.
Routers and switches are needed if there is more then one
computer or if they are networked together. Routers and
switches direct the flow of information to the correct
computer.
